Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) thinks that dumping former Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as House speaker was a major own goal by House Republicans.
Writing on Twitter, Massie lamented the current state of the GOP agenda under Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who this week oversaw a failed push to impeach Biden Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and a standalone bill to send emergency military aid to Israel.
"Getting rid of Speaker McCarthy has officially turned into an unmitigated disaster," he wrote. "All work on separate spending bills has ceased. Spending reductions have been traded for spending increases. Warrantless spying has been temporarily extended. Our majority has shrunk."

McCarthy was last year after a group of eight Republicans, led by rebellious Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), voted with all House Democrats to vacate the chair.
This set off a weekslong fight that saw the GOP rifle through a number of failed candidates -- including Reps. Steve Scalise (R-LA), Jim Jordan (R-OH), and Tom Emmer (R-MN) -- before finally settling on Johnson.
Although Johnson is more ideologically conservative than McCarthy, he has nonetheless run into the same problem McCarthy had with many hardliners who have rebelled against plans to avert government shutdowns.
