'First, they outlaw Dr. Seuss': Kevin McCarthy lies about Democrats on House floor

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) on Tuesday falsely claimed that books by Dr. Seuss had been "outlawed" while arguing against a Democratic bill that aims to expand voting rights.

"Every one has a personal story -- your friend, your family, your neighbor receiving a ballot they shouldn't have," McCarthy said during a speech on the House floor. "Yet under H.R. 1, future voters could be dead or illegal immigrants or maybe even registered two or three times. I guess Democrats just don't care as long as they get reelected."

McCarthy suggested that the bill is unconstitutional because "we generally defer to states and counties to run elections."

"Democrats want to change that," he added. "First, they outlaw Dr. Seuss and now they want to tell us what to say. The want to remove reasonable debates about early voting, registration and no-excuse mail-in balloting from the states and counties and resolve them with a single federal solution decided by the whims of Washington."

Earlier this week, Dr. Seuss Enterprises said that it would stop publishing six books due to racist or insensitive imagery. Democrats, however, did not "outlaw" the books.
