House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) backed off his call for Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) to resign after being questioned about having different standards for Republicans and Democrats.
On Sunday, McCarthy said Menendez should resign after being indicted on federal bribery charges. McCarthy, however, has refused to call for the resignation of Rep. George Santos (R-NY) despite charges of alleged fraud and money laundering.
"Do you think that George Santos, who's been indicted on federal criminal charges, should also resign?" CNN's Manu Raju asked McCarthy on Tuesday.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
"No," the Speaker replied. "I think George could have his day in court, and I think Menendez could have his day in court."
"Mr. Speaker, why do you think he needs to resign, then?" Raju pressed.
McCarthy immediately changed his position.
"It could be his choice of what he wants to do, yes," he said.
