The Department of Homeland Security appeared to taunt a high-profile individual facing deportation proceedings on Monday night.
On Monday, DHS took Kilmar Abrego Garcia into custody after a routine immigration check. The federal government posted on social media that it planned to deport Abrego Garcia to Uganda, a country to which he has no ties.
Media reports about the incident referred to Abrego Garcia as a "Maryland man," a phrase that DHS riffed on to respond to its critics.
"Uganda man," the agency posted on X.
"He doesn’t belong here," the agency said in another post on X. "He won’t be staying here. America is a safer nation without this MS-13 Gangbanger in it. Good riddance."
The move to deport Abrego Garcia comes about 160 days after he was reunited with his family. Abrego Garcia was previously deported to El Salvador's infamous CECOT prison.
Abrego Garcia's lawyers filed a new lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Maryland over his detention. A federal judge ordered DHS to halt deportation proceedings against Abrego Garcia on Monday afternoon.
