Critics slammed the Department of Homeland Security on Monday after it issued a taunt about its efforts to deport a high-profile individual.
Earlier in the day, Kilmar Abrego Garcia was detained by immigration officials after a routine check-in. Abrego Garcia was previously deported to El Salvador's infamous CECOT prison in March.
His arrest comes just 160 days after he was brought back to the U.S. and reunited with his family.
DHS posted a taunt on its official X account on Monday evening, calling Abrego Garcia "Uganda man." The phrase is a tongue-in-cheek reference to "Maryland man," a moniker that the media gave Abrego Garcia in its coverage of his arrest.
The phrase did not sit well with many people, some of whom shared their thoughts on social media.
"They’re making fun of the media referring to Kilmar Abrego Garcia as a Maryland man as they threaten to send him to Uganda, a country where he’s never lived," journalist Matt Novak noted on Bluesky. "They’re simply f------ vile."
"The family of Kilmar Abrego Garcia should sue the living hell out of this Administration," activist John Pavlovitz posted on X.
"You’ll have fun in years of depositions, I promise you that. Won’t be a tough guy then," military veteran John Jackson said on X.
"Trump will illegally try to ruin the life of anyone who disagrees with him," Democrat Janice Hough wrote on X.
