Labor activists protest Indiana House speaker with Christmas carols

The labor rights group Central Indiana Jobs with Justice showed up at the home of Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma (R) last week to express their displeasure with "right to work" legislation he has championed.

"One the first day of Christmas Brian Bosma gave to me, a right to work bill under the tree," the small group of carolers sang. "One the second day of Christmas Brian Bosma gave to me, a 2 percent raise and a right to work bill under the tree."

The group continued the song, which finally ended with the line: "On the 12th day of Christmas, Brian Bosma gave to me: 12 billionaires toasting, 11 bankers counting, 10 lobbyists shmoozing, 9 bosses milking, 8 managers firing, 7 bucks an hour, 6 days a working, life in poverty! Foreclosed homes, 3 part-time jobs, 2 percent raise, and right to work bill under the tree."

The pro-union activists then sang their own version of the Christmas song "Santa Claus is Coming to Town."

The "right to work" legislation would prohibit union security clauses in union contracts, meaning non-union employees would benefit from collective bargaining agreements without paying union dues. Twenty-two states have similar laws.

Republicans claim the legislation would create jobs and have made it their top priority. But opponents of the law say it is designed to destroy unions and would reduce wages.
