Letitia James got Trump accountant to throw his boss under the bus: legal expert

New York Attorney General Letitia James' attorneys were able to completely derail former Trump Organization top accountant Jeff McConney's story on the stand during the civil fraud trial, former prosecutor Renato Mariotti told MSNBC's Katie Phang on Wednesday evening.
McConney broke down in tears on the stand under the cross-examination — and supplied a document that dealt a body blow to Trump's defense.
"Let's start with the A.G. fraud trial," said Phang, herself an attorney and legal analyst. "What do you make of that testimony alleging that Trump would have final review of a fraudulent document?"
"Very interesting, because ultimately at the end of the day, that is going to put knowledge in Donald Trump's head," said Mariotti.
That matters, he continued, because ultimately "this case comes down to these false statements and whether or not Trump knew about the false statements used to mislead lenders."

"What's interesting is he was prepared to put the blame on [accounting firm] Mazars," Mariotti added. "He, on direct examination, was trying to say it was all the accounting firm, all these other people. It wasn't until one of the attorney general's team went up and cross-examined him he actually had to admit, well, actually, myself and Donald Trump, we were the ones who were doing a lot of the fact-checking when it came to the documents."
