Lewis Black rips Wisconsin voter ID law in ACLU ad: 'Not on my watch, baby'

Comedian Lewis Black blasted voting restrictions in Wisconsin in an ad posted by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on Thursday.

"Elected officials shouldn't get to choose who gets to choose elected officials," Black rants. "Look, people marched and fought and died for the right to vote. And they want to legislate away that sacrifice to stay in power? Not on my watch, baby."

The ad centers on a photo shoot involving Black -- the group's new "voting rights ambassador" -- and Voting Rights Project Director Dale Ho.

"Why stop people from voting early?" Black asks.

"Early voting makes it easier to vote," Ho replies. "And that can decide an election."

As proof, Ho shows Black pictures of a line of Florida voters who had to wait for hours to reach the polls, as well as a convoluted graphic purportedly showing the steps to get a voter ID in Wisconsin.

"This looks like a chart showing how tough it is for a sperm to find a fertilized egg," Black says. "Which explains why it's so tired when it gets there."

As Reuters reported on Monday, a federal appeals court ruled that the law, which requires voters to obtain a special identification, was constitutional. The ACLU has since asked the Supreme Court for a stay on the decision.
