Lindsey Graham supports 9/11-style commission for attacks on the US Capitol
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) may not support impeaching former President Donald Trump for the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, but he wants to get to the bottom of the failures from that day.
Axios reported Sunday that Graham supports a 9-11-style commission to review the top-to-bottom failures from the attack on the United States Capitol.
"We need a 9/11 commission to find out what happened and make sure it never happens again, and I want to make sure that the Capitol footprint can be better defended next time," Graham told Fox on Sunday.
He went on to say that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-KY) comments that Trump was to blame after the acquittal was a mistake and that it will hurt Republicans during the 2022 midterm elections.
Graham and other Republicans have been citing a right-wing meme that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) should have done something to prepare for Trump's rally at the White House Ellipse on Jan. 6. Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser requested additional help from the National Guard on Jan. 4 and Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller reportedly approved that request, said CNN.
That claim, however, conflicts with what the former Capitol Police chief told theWashington Post -- that their requests for National Guard help ahead of the event were denied six times by officials. Former Chief Steven Sund said that House Sergeant-at-Arms Paul Irving was concerned how the "optics" would look if they declared an emergency before former President Donald Trump's rally even began. The DC City Council also confirmed that DC was denied a request on Jan. 6.
Sund also told the Post that Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Michael Stenger suggested that he make an informal request that the National Guard to be prepared if they were needed.
With a commission investigating the attack, Congress will be able to call White House officials and Defense Department staff who could testify on what they saw on Jan. 6.
