Louie Gohmert's Ebola silver lining: Latinos too scared to cross border with infected Africans

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) on Monday asserted that President Barack Obama had "cut a deal" with the leaders of African countries to bring foreign citizens with Ebola into the United States.

“I can’t help but believe, just based on the way we’ve got all these nebulous excuses why not to have a travel ban, this president, I guarantee you, we’re going to find out, he has cut a deal with African leaders," Gohmert said on Sean Hannity's radio show. "They're going to bring people in."

The Tea Party-backed Republican likened the alleged conspiracy with African leaders to a program designed like reunite U.S. citizens with family members from Haiti. The program was put in place after the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010.

"I bet you there is a deal he has cut with African leaders," Gohmert opined. "He has probably told them, 'Look, keep in mind I'll have a lot more flexibility after the election.' But that's the only thing that would explain why he won't do a [travel] ban."

Hannity noted that conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch had also warned last week that the president was "actively formulating plans” to "bring Ebola patients into the United States for treatment within the first days of diagnosis."

"I don't know whether that's true or not," Gohmert admitted. "But I just think we're going to find out a whole lot after the election."

"So many of the Nigerians have captured my heart, sweet wonderful people," he continued. "They may not be as well educated, but they're smart enough to know, if you you're dealing with a country where there's Ebola, you put a ban on travel from that country into Nigeria. This administration has not figured that out yet."

And according to Gohmert, the 3,000 U.S. troops that the Obama administration had promised to send to West Africa to help deal with the crisis were all a part of the plan to bring Ebola patients into the U.S. following the November elections.

"It makes no sense whatsoever except this is some little deal the president's made with people to keep them quiet before the election," he declared. "We haven't heard a lot from West Africans, except we know were not happy with the president not publicly offering them more. Why would they be so quiet unless there's a deal back there that, gee, once we're past the election, the president will have more flexibility."

"And between ISIS and Ebola, you would think that the next step would be to secure America's borders," Hannity offered. "If this doesn't do it, I don't know what will."

But the Texas congressman speculated that President Barack Obama's refusal to ban travel could also have a silver lining: it could frighten other undocumented immigrants.

"If people coming across know, gee, maybe we may be traveling with people that have Ebola, maybe that will cut down the numbers because the people coming in are apparently smarter than the people in this administration," Gohmert quipped. "We're wide open to terrorists, we're wide open to people that want to hurt us."
