Louisiana Republican rants: Obama wants to use immigrants to build 'one-party state'

Rep. John Fleming misrepresented President Barack Obama's executive action on immigration to paint it as a tool in an alleged plan for Democratic Party dominance, Buzzfeed reported.

"Make no mistake about it, that this is a part of a grand plan for the Democrat Party to make this nation into a single party state, as they have already accomplished in California," Fleming told radio host John Fredericks. "And you see the devastating impact it's having there."

Fleming said that Obama's action, which he announced last November, would impact "5 or 10 million illegals," but in fact, the expansion of his Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program would cover between 3 and 4 million undocumented immigrants.

He also falsely stated that immigrants covered by the order would "enjoy free healthcare," a possible reference to the Affordable Care Act. As the Washington Postreported at the time, they would not be eligible for subsidies under the law, commonly known as Obamacare.

While "the people who come across the border" were hard workers and had "great values," Fleming complained, they also tended to vote for Democrats. He did not mention his party's anti-immigrant rhetoric as a possible cause for this trend.

"We know they come from cultures that look to government for solutions and so the Democrat Party knows this," he said. "They know that if they can’t win elections using American citizens, this is a good way to go around that."

The president's order has not been implemented as a result of an injunction granted last month. The order has been challenged by 26 states arguing that Obama overstepped his authority in ordering the DACA expansion.

"We think we are going to win," Fleming said. "But we hope that stay isn’t lifted because a lot of damage can be done in the meantime."
