Maddow dings GOP for 'diverse' all-male leadership picks

As a handy guide for her viewers, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow and her staff put together a clip-n-save style graphic showing the 19 men the GOP had selected so far to chair committees in the House of Representatives.

"There may be a lot of diversity in terms of which flavors of ice cream prefer, or something," she said Wednesday. "But otherwise, as you can see, they all do have one thing in common: The Republican party's commitment to diversity after the 2012 election."

The all-male assemblage in the party's leadership plans, she noted earlier in her show, was a stark contrast from its "Woman Up" campaign earlier this year, which included a separate lounge at the Republican National Convention featuring a bar and makeup stations.

As an NBC producer discovered, Maddow said, it was a situation that at least one existing female Republican lawmaker, Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), didn't want to discuss.

"I think that it is, uh ... I wish we weren't having to address that issue," Blackburn told producer Frank Thorpe. "I would like to have thought that could have women chairmen, but the fact that this is kind of the way it has turned out as a vote ... I think what we just have to do is just continue to highlight the well qualified women that are in our conference."

But, Maddow noted, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) still had a chance to at least sort-of remedy the situation, since there are still two committee chair positions up for grabs. The problem is, those spots must be filled from within the existing committee memberships, and as she highlighted in another graphic, the potential candidates are all white men, as well.

"Choose from among these gals, John Boehner," she said.
