Maddow: Republican failure in 2012 is 'bottomless', 'astonishing'

Friday night on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show," host Rachel Maddow took a look at the questions facing the Republican Party in the wake of Tuesday's blowout election.  Who will be the leader of the party now?  Will the party double down on social issues or pursue a more economics-focused agenda.

The questions matter now because, she said, "It was an overall electoral disaster for Republicans to lose the presidency," but Republicans in down-ticket races did just as badly.

"It was a sure bet that the Republicans were supposed to take control of the Senate this year," she continued, "But not only did the Republicans not take control of the Senate, but the Democrats held on to control and increased their margins.  That's impossible.  That is an impossible Republican failure in a year like this."

"And the depth of that failure in bottomless.  When you look at how they failed, the more astonishing it is how badly they've failed," she said, going on to cite how Republican Senate candidates in some races did even worse than Romney with voters.

"The country said 'No' to Mitt Romney this week," she said, "but they said, 'Oh, no, no, nooooo' to Republican Senate candidates."
