'Disaster': Trump's MAGA diehards are trashing 'over his head' Speaker Johnson
November 02, 2023
It only took one week for new Speaker of the House Michael Johnson (R-LA) to see his honeymoon period dissipate as he begins the hard work of trying to bring his factitious caucus together in a way former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) could not.
And while Donald Trump praised his ascension from backbencher to a leadership position, hardcore MAGA supporters of the former president are growing increasingly dismayed that Johnson is squishy on some of their favorite red meat topics.
According to a report from the Daily Beast's Zachary Petrizzo, Johnson is coming under fire for being open to more aid for Ukraine which is angering some supporters of Trump who want the U.S. to leave the country to the mercy of the Russian invaders.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
And that is not the only position that is irking the MAGA faithful.
The Beast reports that Johnson's plan to find a way to fund both Ukraine and Israel was greeted by MAGA extremist Laura Loomer, who called his comments a "DISASTER!"
In comments to the Beast, far-right podcaster Stew Peters complained, "Americans are right to be wary of Israel First Speaker Mike Johnson, who has bowed down to kiss Israel’s little Baby Shmekel by pushing funds to both Ukraine and Israel."
"While it might be easy to dismiss Loomer and Peters as right-wing kooks, many inside of Trump’s orbit agree with some of the initial criticisms from the hard right," Petrizzo wrote before adding, "Ukraine funding serves as one of the key sticking points for Trump allies, and Johnson’s tepid support for Ukraine is already rubbing them the wrong way. But Ukraine is far from their only criticism of Johnson. Notably, the early-stage concerns have evolved into a multiple-point list for Trumpworld detractors."
Among those issues is anger he has not forcefully criticized critical race theory (CRT) enough and fears he might be working hand-in-hand with Trump adversary Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on a budget deal.
According to one Trump operative, "Everyone’s first exposure to this guy was bizarre clips that sound like he supports CRT. Then he has one meeting with [Mitch] McConnell and walks out waving the Ukraine flag and pushing a stop-gap spending bill until January."
“He seems like a nice guy, but this is wartime politically,” they added, “And everything he’s doing so far reeks of being in over his head.”
