Counterintelligence expert Malcolm Nance escalated the feud between he and Fox News host Tucker Carlson during his appearance on Dean Obeidallah's SirusXMProgress show this week.
Nance, who is the definitive expert in terrorism, intelligence, insurgency and torture. He's written extensively about ways in which Russian hackers managed to target the weaknesses in the United States. Tucker Carlson, by contrast, has a Bachelor's in history from Trinity College and does commentary for Fox News.
Still, Carlson attacked a theory from Nance that the Russians were involved in a decades-long disinformation attack against the US. The long-term research into American behavioral patterns, culture and politics enabled them to easily execute their campaign in 2016.
Carlson, naturally, took the nuanced look at foreign espionage and turned it into a sound-bite that misconstrued the position entirely.
"So there’s been a cost to our Russia fixation, a massive one," Carlson said during his show. "Years later we’ll look back and wonder what happened. How did everyone in America with an Ivy League education go insane in a single year? Was there some kind of mass poisoning? Ergotism? Historians will sort it out."
"For now, all we know that the people in charge have lost it," he continued. "Listen to them explain the intricacies of the Russia conspiracy. They’re mesmerized. It’s a tale so complex and riddled with internal contradictions, it sounds like eastern religion. Only they really understand it. To them, Russia is the touchstone. It’s the comprehensive theory of everything."
Nance shot back on Twitter that it's clear Carlson has never heard of the Russia scandal.
Much less the "Russian disinformation warfare/hybrid warfare strategy. Someone send him the NATO Manual on Russian infowar or Senate & Oxford study links! Please help him find some facts! He’s drowning in stupid y’all!"
Nance took it to a new level during his show with Obeidallah. Nance explained that he was discussing the Oxford report that the Republican-led Senate Intelligence Committee ordered about the 2016 campaign. He wondered how this suddenly became a "thing" among Carlson and the right-wing as if Nance was the one who broke the story.
"Did the Russia scandal just come up in the Fox world?" he wondered. "Is that what's happening? That today was the first day that it's actually leaked through and that what I've been saying on TV every day for two and a half years finally entered their universe?"
