Man buys gun at Arizona gun show and promptly shoots friend by mistake

The Crossroads of the West Gun Show in Phoenix, Arizona was disrupted Saturday when a man accidentally shot his friend in the torso after purchasing the weapon from a vendor.

According to Houston's ABC Channel 13, police are investigating how the gun came to be loaded at all at when trading show rules expressly forbid loaded weapons on the grounds.

Captain Damon Cecil of the Phoenix Police Department told Channel 13, "That's what we're trying to find out who loaded it when was it loaded that's all going to be vetted in the investigation."

The New York Daily News reported that the shooter was inspecting his newly purchased semi-automatic handgun when it fired a round. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive.

Police have declined to identify either man.

Crossroads of the West is a traveling gun show that stopped at the Arizona Fairgrounds this weekend. The Daily News noted that the show's website says, “No loaded firearms and no loaded magazines are permitted in any Crossroads gun show.”

Multiple signs were reportedly posted at the event that read, "NO LOADED GUNS IN THE SHOW.”

Investigators are currently trying to piece together the chain of events that led to the shooting.
