A 19-year-old Marine may have been playing a so-called "trust game" with fellow Marines on Friday night when he shot himself to death.
WRC reported that Marine Barracks Washington, D.C. and D.C. police were investigating the death of Lance Cpl. Cody Scott Schoenfelder.
According to The Washington Post, the South Dakota native shot himself in the head Friday night. Marine Barracks Washington D.C. spokesperson Capt. John Norton Schoenfelder said that Schoenfelder was pronounced dead on Saturday.
Sources told WRC that investigators were looking into whether Schoenfelder was playing a trust game, where one Marine points a weapon at another Marine and asks, "Do you trust me?" But the gun is supposed to not have a round chambered.
WRC confirmed that at least one other Marine was present when Schoenfelder was shot.
Schoenfelder had received the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terror Service Medal, according to a statement from the Marine barracks.
