Watch: General Milley takes veiled shot at Trump during retirement ceremony
September 29, 2023
Gen. Mark Milley, the outgoing chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, took a thinly veiled shot at former President Donald Trump on Friday during a speech at his retirement ceremony.
Milley -- whom Trump said recently deserved to be executed for his efforts to reassure the Chinese government that Trump wouldn't be allowed to launch an unprovoked military attack on them during the presidential transition period in late 2020 -- reiterated during his speech that members of the military swear an oath to the United States Constitution and not to any one person.
"We don't take an oath to a king or a queen, or to a tyrant or a dictator -- and we don't take an oath to a wannabe dictator," Milley said pointedly, in a thinly veiled reference to Trump's efforts to illegally remain in power after losing the 2020 election. "We don't take our oath to an individual. We take an oath to the Constitution, and we take an oath to the idea that is America, and we're willing to die to protect it."
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
After Trump called for his execution late last week, Milley revealed that he had to get additional security to protect his family.
"I've got adequate safety precautions," Milley said during an interview with CBS News' Norah O'Donnell. "I wish those comments had not been made, but they were. We will take appropriate measures to ensure my safety and the safety of my family."
