A potentially lucrative agreement between the cannabis company Trulieve and disgraced former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) was leaked this week thanks to a curious onlooker who snapped a photograph of his laptop screen, a deal that appears to have been offered, at least in part, due to his closeness with President Donald Trump.
The leak prompted Gaetz to issue his followers a helpful reminder.
“Apparently someone sitting behind me on a flight recorded me without my knowledge,” Gaetz wrote on X Tuesday.
“They found me texting my mother about news of the day, family finances, and working on my laptop. Please let this be a reminder to everyone to call your mother (and maybe get a screen protector)!”
According to the photograph as reported by The Daily Beast, the proposed agreement would entitle Gaetz to an initial payment of $250,000 for “legal representation, consulting,” and “administration-related guidance” to assist Trulieve in “any lobbying activity,” among other provisions potentially obscured in the photograph.
The agreement also details an additional “Super Success Fee” if certain conditions are met. While the dollar amount of the “Super Success Fee” is partially obscured in the photograph, it appears likely to be at least $2 million.
Trump nominated Gaetz as his pick for attorney general last year, a controversial pick for many reasons, least among them being the impending release of a House Ethics Committee report on allegations of illicit drug use, sexual misconduct and misuse of campaign funds. Gaetz, having resigned from his seat immediately after being nominated, withdrew himself from consideration just eight days after being nominated.
