Maxine Waters demands closed-door Michael Cohen testimony be opened to the public

In a rare example of Democratic Party disagreements being aired in public, one of Speaker Nancy Pelosi's committee chairs slammed a decision by another during a Monday appearance on MSNBC's "All In" with Chris Hayes.

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), the chair of the House Financial Services Committee, was asked about a decision to allow Michael Cohen to testify behind closed-doors.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the chair of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, announced Monday that Cohen would "voluntarily" appear before his committee.

"Michael Cohen agreed to public testimony on February 7th, he then backed out, citing threats from the president, he's now agreed to closed-door testimony on February 8th. Do you think it's important that he give open, public testimony," Hayes asked.

"Absolutely," Waters replied.

"I am adamantly opposed to all of these closed testimony hearings with various people who are involved with this whole question whether or not the president was involved with collusion or obstructed justice, et cetera, et cetera," she explained. "No, I don't like the fact that Cohen will be in a closed hearing with members testifying on anything that he said, he's not said."

"I think it should be out in the public," she added. "The public wants to know."

Waters also said she is working to ensure that special counsel Robert Mueller's report will be publicly released.

"The public needs to be what is going on. I demand it and I'm trying to organize everybody that I can to this report to be released to the public," Waters noted.
