Pete Buttigieg 'can't imagine' God would support the GOP after sending Trump to the White House

South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg on Tuesday upped his war of words with the Republican Party by once again declaring that God could not possibly support someone as immoral as President Donald Trump.

In an interview with NBC, Buttigieg insisted that he didn't believe that God had any political party, although he also specifically ruled out the possibility of God backing the GOP for putting Trump in the White House.

Buttigieg began by saying that Americans need to "stop seeing religion as a kind of cudgel as if God belonged to a political party," but then added that, "if He did, I can't imagine it would be the one that sent the current president into the White House."

The Indiana mayor then went on to explain why he believes that the Trump White House is not living up to biblical standards, despite the fact that it's being backed by evangelical Christians.

"What we see [in the White House] is so different than what I hear in scripture when I am in church," he said. "I hear about taking care of the marginalized and defending the weak and supporting the poor and visiting the prisoner and welcoming the stranger and humility and decency. These are the things that are taught in Sunday schools around this country. And so the idea that that is the property of the Republican Party, especially this Republican Party and some of the choices they have made in recent years, it just doesn't add up to me."
