Speaking to CBS News' "60 Minutes" on Sunday, Attorney General Merrick Garland sat down for a rare moment to speak to the media and respond to some of the conspiracy theories lodged against him.
Among the things Garland told Scott Pelley, "the most important aspect of the regulations is that the special counsel is not subject to the day-to-day supervision of anyone in the Justice Department." He explained that it ensures political opponents are removed from such investigations.
"You are not in communication with the president or any member of his administration with regard to the investigation of former President [Donald] Trump?" asked Pelley.
"No, I am not," Garland responded.
"If President Biden asked you to take action with regard to the Trump investigation, what would your reaction be?" Pelley asked.
"I am sure that that will not happen. But I would not do anything in that regard. And if necessary, I would resign. But there is no sense that anything like that will happen," Garland said.
Pelley went on to ask if he's had to tell Biden "hands off" but Garland said that the president has never attempted to put his hands on any of the investigations, including the one involving his son, Hunter Biden.
Garland explained that special counsel David Weiss has been the one handling the investigation from the early days of the probe during Donald Trump's administration. Garland reiterated that during his nomination hearing, he would not fire Weiss or otherwise involve himself.
Republicans demanded that Garland give Weiss special counsel status. Garland did. They're now complaining that Weiss is somehow corrupt.
He also said that the White House hasn't attempted to intervene either.
Republicans have alleged that none of those facts are true, citing IRS whistleblowers who attended meetings with FBI and DOJ agents. The FBI agents dispute the claims by the whistleblowers and there are subtle differences in the typed notes compared to the written notes revealed by the House Judiciary Committee.
Nothing Garland says is likely to satisfy the House Republicans investigating the Justice Department, however.
