Michelle Obama: Being president 'reveals who you are'

First Lady Michelle Obama gave a rousing speech at the Democratic convention Tuesday night, saying that she had seen firsthand how her husband has struggled and fought for the values of common Americans.

"Well, today, after so many struggles and triumphs and moments that have tested my husband in ways I never could have imagined," she said. "I have seen firsthand that being president doesn’t change who you are – it reveals who you are."

Describing her relationship with President Obama, the First Lady said they understood the issues pressing financially strapped Americans because they too were once young and saddled with debt. And throughout her speech, Mrs. Obama stuck with that theme, saying her husband was best suited to lead the country because he personally understood the struggles of common Americans.

"So in the end, for Barack, these issues aren’t political, they’re personal," she said. "Because Barack knows what it means when a family struggles. He knows what it means to want something more for your kids and grandkids."

"Barack knows the American Dream because he’s lived it, and he wants everyone in this country to have that same opportunity, no matter who we are, or where we’re from, or what we look like, or who we love," she continued.

Mrs. Obama also said that no matter how bleak things seem now, Americans would triumph as it has in the past based on our collective strength.

"So today, when the challenges we face start to seem overwhelming or even impossible, let us never forget that doing the impossible is the history of this nation," she said. "It is who we are as Americans. It is how this country was built."
