MSNBC anchor Alex Witt was stunned on Sunday after reporting on a deadly attack on a Mormon church in Michigan.
At least one person was killed and nine others injured after a 40-year-old gunman opened fire on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan. Authorities said the gunman drove the truck through the church's front door before the shooting started. He then set the church on fire and took his own life.
Witt spoke with Tom Manger, the former U.S. Capitol Police chief, about the incident on Sunday's broadcast of "Alex Witt Reports."
Witt asked if Manger expected more congregations to increase security following the attack.
"You have parishioners that goto church armed, taking turns," Witt said. "Congregants sign up for security duty armedwith guns at the front doors oftheir church. Is this what it'scoming to?"
"Yes, it is, unfortunately," Manger said. "Even the church that Iattend, there are a numberof police officers that attendthis church, and they havegotten a group together. And infact, when they go to theservice, they're armed. Theystand in the back of the churchjust to keep a watch onwhat's going on both inside andoutside of the church.
"You lookat any government building nowthat has the bollards that are usedto prohibit vehicles fromgetting too close to a building," he continued. "I think those are just going tobecome ubiquitous."
Witt shook her head in a stunned silence.
