New whispers about dumping Mike Johnson as House GOP becomes 'reality free zone': reporter
January 09, 2024
Could House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) break Kevin McCarthy's record for the shortest speakership in American history?
Punchbowl News' Jake Sherman reports that some hardliner House Republicans "are already whispering about dumping" Johnson in the wake of his deal with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to avert a government shutdown.
One House Republican tells Punchbowl News that there are "significant concerns growing about Mike’s ability to jump to this level and deliver conservative wins" and that there's a "growing feeling that he’s in way, way over his head."
But as Sherman explains on Twitter, Johnson's deal with Schumer is simply a reflection of the fact that House Republicans have little real leverage given that they don't control the Senate or the White House and given that their current majority is razor-thin.

"The truth is what Johnson did... is not controversial," writes Sherman. "But the House has turned into a reality free zone, in many respects."
Sources also told Sherman that Johnson is now considering using a continuing resolution to keep the government open, which is something that he had ruled out doing just two months ago.
"Why Johnson should pass a CR: A shutdown does him ZERO good," Sherman explains. "Those itching for [a government shutdown] will think it's not long enough. Those who are against shutdowns will think it's stupid."
