After canceling a Wednesday vote in the House on a compromise budget resolution because he couldn't get his caucus in line, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is in a for a "wild day" Thursday, according to Punchbowl News' Jake Sherman.
In his morning report, Sherman noted that Johnson has been trying to sway at least 12 hard-right members who are hard "no" because the resolution doesn't contain enough deep cuts which, at the end of the day, would not be approved by the more moderate Senate.
As Sherman wrote on X, "You can no longer paper over the massive gap between House and Senate Rs on spending cuts. It’s a massive issue that is going to define the next stage of passing Trump's agenda."

"They discussed going to conference or pushing an amendment that tries to bind the senate to a spending cut number. But those two options are flawed and time consuming," Sherman added. "It will be a wild day on the Hill."
At issue is a gap between the two chambers among Republicans: "$4 billion for the Senate versus $1.5 trillion for the House: Many Senate Republicans simply don’t want to cut as much spending."
For his part, with a deadline looming and admitting he won't keep the chamber in session over the weekend because of the Jewish holiday of Passover, Johnson has proposed a formal conference negotiation with the Senate to hammer out a deal, something his hardline members want and Senate Republicans want no part of.
According to one GOP senator, "They got on our case for delaying. Now they’re the ones delaying. The president was right, these guys are grandstanding.”
The report adds Johnson may attempt another vote on Thursday although, as of last night, there was no evidence of his having persuaded his recalcitrant members to give in.
