The co-hosts of "The View" called out Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) after they said he called for the torture of California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA).
Newsom is opposing Trump's order to send the National Guard into Los Angeles under the guise that immigration agents must be protected from protesters. No immigration agents have been killed or beaten by protesters, though five Los Angeles police officers have been injured, KTLA reported.
Still, Trump told the press on Tuesday that without his action, Los Angeles would be burned to the ground by now. Newsom and local police disagree, saying that protests were peaceful before Trump sent in soldiers.
At the top of "The View" on Wednesday, they played a clip of Johnson's comments where he was asked whether Newsom should be arrested for the protests in Los Angeles. Johnson said he didn't know, but that Newsom should be "tarred and feathered."
The audience responded with gasps and boos as the video played.
"Tarring and feathering, by the way, is a medieval torture," said Independent Sara Haines.
"That's what they did to Black people all throughout the United States," Whoopi Goldberg cut in. "So I would not — just an FYI to Mike Johnson, that is probably not the direction you want to go in right now."
That's when co-host Joy Behar mentioned fellow comedian Kathy Griffin.
"Didn't [she] practically lose her career when she did something that looked like it was violence towards the president?" Behar asked. "But how come he gets away" with it?
Haines said that this battle between Trump and Los Angeles is an attack on Americans.
"The insanity of all of this playing out is a waste of money, but the people who are taking the biggest hit are actually just the people," said Haines. "Those protesters on the street, not the bad actor, the anarchist, I mean the good protesters and the law enforcement, they're all being pitted against each other, and people are getting hurt and wounded because politicians are playing games right now, and this is how it always plays out. This is how it always plays out."
