'Mind-blowing': GOP candidate in fraudulent NC election claims he 'didn't know' he was funding absentee ballot scheme

MSNBC reporter Leigh Ann Caldwell said Wednesday that it was "mind blowing" that Republican Mark Harris, who "won" the 2018 North Carolina congressional election now being adjudicated by the state Board of Elections for fraud, claimed he didn't know his chief political consultant, Andy Yates, never kept track of how his campaign money was being spent.

"Mark Harris hired Andy Yates, and they hired McCrae Dowless to run this absentee ballot scheme," said Caldwell. "What is so mind blowing to me, and what seems to be mind blowing to some of these board members as well, is that Andy Yates would just pay McCrae Dowless without any formal invoices."

Dowless "would come up and say 'hey I need $4,000 for some get out the vote efforts", she continued. "Andy Yates would say "sure" and he just hand over a check without anything detailed, without anything on paper, and that amounted to $131,000 over the course of the primary and general election."

"This doesn't yet connect Harris directly to McCrae Dowles," Caldwell cautioned. "Its just another piece of evidence in this entire situation, that shows there's a lot of sketchy stuff going on."
