Minnesota Republican encourages gun owners to curb stomp Democrats in unhinged rally speech

Republican Minnesota State Rep. Cal Bahr has found himself in hot water after he told a group of gun owners that Democrats deserve to be curb stomped for proposing new gun safety measures.

The Twin Cities Pioneer Press reports that Bahr made his incendiary remarks at the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus rally on Saturday, where he was whipping up opposition to two different gun control proposals that are coming up for debate at the Minnesota state government.

"There’s a lot of us in this room that have had enough, and it’s time to start riding herd on the rest of these people that want to take your rights away from you," Bahr said at the rally. "They will not go quietly into the good night. They need to be kicked to the curb and stomped on and run over a few times."

Bahr's attacks on gun control supporters come as the state legislature mulls taking up bills to enact universal gun background checks and to enact a "red flag" law that will give police the rights to confiscate firearms from people who have been deemed dangerous.

Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz quickly condemned Bahr for spouting violent rhetoric in anticipation of the debate on gun safety.

"Encouraging violence endangers our communities and undermines our democracy, particularly when the statement is made by an elected official," Walz said. "While heated debates are a healthy part of the political process, this type of language is unacceptable and demands condemnation from people of all political parties."
