Suspected MN assassin indicted as prosecutors leave death penalty on the table

The suspected assassin accused of gunning down a Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband has been indicted on murder charges.

A grand jury indicted Vance Boelter Tuesday afternoon on six federal charges, and prosecutors indicated the death penalty remains a possibility.

Prosecutors said Boelter killed former Minnesota Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, on June 14.

“The ultimate decision as to whether to seek the death penalty will not come for several months,” acting U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson said at a news conference. The statement signals the decision will likely be up to Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Boelter has also been charged with two stalking counts for tracking down Hortman and state Sen. John Hoffman (D), who was wounded by a gunshot the same day.
