The deadline to raise the debt ceiling is inching closer as Republicans continue to not merely oppose raising it but are blocking Democrats from handling the issue.
Speaking at a Wednesday press briefing for the White House, press secretary Jen Pskai responded to questions about a press release from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) saying that Democrats could choose between two options: Republicans would either not block raising the debt ceiling or not block the president's budget reconciliation package, but they wouldn't do both.
It's a similar comment revealed by Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) this week, who said that McConnell was effectively saying that Republicans would hold the debt ceiling hostage unless Democrats dismissed the Build Back Better initiative.
Psaki said that all McConnell has done is send out a press release and that no formal offer has been made.
"There's still an opportunity for the Republicans to join us in being adults in the room," said Psaki.
