Morning Joe: Trump and Gingrich are 'two volatile chemicals' — it'll 'blow up'

Morning Joe co-host Joe Scarborough thinks Trump is going to choose Newt Gingrich as his vice presidential nominee, even though it isn't the best idea.

"I think it's probably Newt and [Mike] Pence," Scarborough said on Thursday morning.

Co-host Mike Brzezinski was a little shocked saying she thought it would be between Gingrich and New Jersey governor Chris Christie.

"I think it should be Christie, right?" Scarborough asked rhetorically. "I think without a doubt it should be Christie. [Trump] says he's not looking for an attack dog. Chris Christie can prosecute the case against Hillary Clinton better than anybody else."

When it comes to some of the scandals that have plagued Christie throughout his administration, Scarborough thinks Christie's Bridgegate is actually a positive. "You bring up a bridge investigation and then you go, 'Oh yeah, OK yeah, they investigated me for closing one lane. They investigated Hillary Clinton for actually putting America's national security at risk. OK, let's talk about those investigations. I'll talk about them every day and we'll be just fine."

If it comes down to Gingrich and Pence, Scarborough doesn't see Gingrich and Trump getting along very well. "I think Newt and Trump together are just two volatile chemicals you wouldn't want to put in the same container, it eventually blows up. And Mike Pence, Mike Pence is just not ready for this. I mean, it takes a special person for being ready for dealing with the chaos of dealing with Donald Trump's campaign could bring every day. And he's been accused of being a, I know Mike, served with him, he'd be an able guy, I think he'd be an able leader, uh, he has been an able leader," Scarborough said about the controversial governor.

He continued that Pence is so "off brand" from what Trump is, as a candidate, and he thinks "bad things would happen."

When talking to correspondent John Meacham, Scarborough said that the worst vice presidential picks all come from the "Dan Quayles who aren't ready for prime time. That have the deer in the headlight moment when pressed." If that isn't enough, there's the "hang out" factor, which Scarborough says is another win for Gingrich, "Donald Trump is not going to want to hang out with Mike Pence." He doesn't think the two would sit well together at the Thanksgiving table.
