Moyers: When life and death measured by profit, 'the cure for gun violence' is more guns

Bill Moyers used a segment of his Jan 4 show to to discuss the National Rifle Association and gun control, referring at one point to the "merchants of death" who he argues profit from the violence -- and fear of violence -- that guns ignite.

He pointed to the "big business" of gun sales and how massacres like the one in Newtown, Conn., often lead to a spike in arms sales.

"So naturally, in a country where even life and death are measured by the profit margin, the cure for gun violence becomes, yes, more guns. Bigger profit," he lamented.

He went on to cite recent sobering gun statistics. "In fact, in just those few weeks since the Newtown slaughter of the innocent, more than 400 people have died from guns in America. That should boost the last quarter profit margins. So not surprising, the merchants of death are experiencing a happy new year," he said.

"We have to keep talking about this, because [NRA Executive Vice President] Wayne LaPierre and the NRA are insidious and powerful predators," he argued, going on to note that 16 years ago the NRA successfully persuaded Congress to rescind funding for government studies on gun violence.

"There are always members of Congress willing to do the gun lobby’s bidding as they profess their love of the second amendment and wait like hungry house pets for the next NRA campaign donation," he went on.
