MSNBC guest blames feminism for 'so-called rape culture': 'They were cheerleaders for all of that'

Author Mona Charen asserted to MSNBC on Tuesday that feminism's embrace of the sexual revolution led to "so-called rape culture" on college campuses.

During an interview on MSNBC's Morning Joe, host Mika Brzezinski praised Charen for her new book, "Sex Matters: How Modern Feminism Lost Touch with Science, Love, and Common Sense."

Charen began the interview by acknowledging that women should have the same rights as men, but added, "Feminism took some wrong turns by endorsing, first of all, the sexual revolution."

"Have we had enough of crotch grabbers and penis tweeters in this society?" the author asked. "Because all of that is what the sexual revolution has gifted to us. That, the so-called rape culture on campuses, the hookup culture, the hostility between men and women."

"Feminism has to take some responsibility because they were cheerleaders for all of that," she insisted. "They thought it was part of women's liberation to endorse that."

MSNBC co-host Joe Scarborough interrupted to warn Charen that her remarks could be taken out of context.

"Just so they don't -- people later don't just take that clip and skewer you, you're not saying feminism endorsed crotch grabbing," Scarborough offered.

"It endorsed destroying the old standard about courtships, sexual continence, about dating," Charen replied. "Sex needed to be kept within its box, right? And unfortunately, the sexual revolution said, 'There are no standards, anything goes and if it's sexual, great. It's just fine.'"

"The sexual revolution gave permission for a kind of behavior that women do not like," she argued. "And the Me Too movement is women saying enough. And in a way, they're saying enough about the sexual revolution."
