MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell says McConnell is bluffing — he doesn’t have the votes to confirm Kavanaugh

MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell said Thursday that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) may be acting confident about confirming Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, but behind the scenes he is struggling to round up the votes, including among senators in his own party.

"There are a number of others whom I know of that Mitch McConnell does not have nailed down yet," Mitchell said. "He's projecting confidence that he has votes on the floor as this gets out of committee. He's already scheduling it, trying to push it through, give it the aura of inevitability."

But Mitchell was quick to add that a crucial strategy the GOP had counted on had not panned out: Democratic acquiescence.

"There are a number of Republicans and some key Democrats as well from red states who the Republicans felt would be forced to go with Kavanaugh," Mitchell said. Instead, she said those senators who were "looking for any kind of political cover" now had "an excuse not to go ahead with it."
