MSNBC's Stephanie Ruhle wasn't having Republican strategist Chris Wilson's revisionist history on the Wednesday after President Donald Trump's State of the Union, demanding to know why the president lied throughout the address, and fact checking her guest repeatedly.
Wilson claimed polling showed strong support for Trump's speech, and praised its appeals to bipartisanship and national unity. This was all too much for Ruhle.
"If I may, why do you think he lied so many times then?" she broke in. "Lied about illegal border crossings, lied about the economy. If it was such a great speech about unity and the economy is doing so well, which it is, why lie?
"Well, lying about the economy, what he said was he continued a great economic structure," Wilson began.
"No, he didn't actually. Excuse me, sir. Nope, that's not what he said," Ruhle shot back over Wilson's objections. "He said he created the greatest economy in U.S. history. That's a lie. He said he created 5.3 million jobs. That's a lie. He said we are now the number one producer of oil and gas which we have been for seven years. Those are lies, sir."
Wilson tried to complain that Trump's words and actions were scrutinized more than any other president in recent history.
"Sir, people went after President Obama for wearing a tan suit," Ruhle reminded him.
"Okay, but we didn't call him a liar," Wilson tried.
"That's because he wasn't," Ruhle said, dismissively.
