1 dead and at least 5 injured in Mesa, Arizona shooting spree

At least four people have been shot in Mesa, Arizona in a Wednesday morning shooting rampage that included victims close by an elementary school.

ABC Channel 15 reported that a spokesman for Mesa Fire and Medical confirmed that four people are being treated by paramedics at a scene close to Alma Elementary School.

The spokesman also said that people are in need of medical attention at another location that may be related to this incident.

CBS Channel 5 reporter Kylee Cruz said on the social medium Twitter that police stopped her within a block of the school and said an "active shooter" was in the area.

KPHO said that one woman was driving in the area when a bullet struck her car window, shattering it.

Police are reportedly canvassing nearby neighborhoods looking for a suspect.

UPDATE (1:41 p.m.): Officials are reporting that medical personnel are working at least two separate scenes and police are investigating up to six. So far, one person -- a man who was shot at a restaurant called The Bistro -- has been taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Schools near the shooting scenes are currently on lockdown. Parents are asked to stand by until safety officials tell them where to pick up their children and when.

Witnesses describe the suspect as a white male who appears to be in his mid-40s. He is described as being bald or balding, dressed in a gray shirt and black pants or shorts. He has a visible tattoo on his neck.

UPDATE (2:07 p.m.): One person is confirmed dead, but their identity is being withheld.

UPDATE (3:54p.m.): Mesa Police are reporting that the suspect is in custody.

UPDATE (5:51 p.m.):According to Talking Points Memo, while police have not released the suspect's name, He has been identified in reports as 41-year-old Ryan Eliot Giroux, a member of the "Hammerskin Nation" skinhead group.

Giroux, who has tattoos reading "skinhead" and "88" -- a code for the phrase "heil Hitler" -- has served three prison terms, the most recent of them a six-year term for attempted aggravated assault. He was released from prison in 2013.

The Southern Poverty Law Center said that Giroux is a member of the same skinhead group as 40-year-old Wade Michael Page, who shot and killed six people and wounded four others at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin before killing himself.
