Musicians rock out against Gov. Walker at get-out-the-vote rally

Thousands of people gathered at the Madison Labor Temple on Friday to participate in a get-out-the-vote rally targeting Republican Gov. Scott Walker, according to The Daily Page.

The rally was headlined by Grammy Award-winning guitarist Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine, singer-songwriter Jackson Browne, Tim McIlrath of the punk rock band Rise Against, international touring hip-hop artist Brother Ali and Mike McColgan, the original lead singer of Dropkick Murphys and the lead singer of the Street Dogs.

"It's gonna be super close," Morello, who acted as the master of ceremonies, proclaimed. "If you knock on 10 doors it might not happen. If you knock on 100 doors, you're going to have a new governor in office on Tuesday!"

Milwaukee mayor Tom Barrett, the Democratic candidate who is running against Walker in the June 5 recall election, also made an appearance at the rally.

The rally was hosted by We Are Wisconsin, and open to anyone who volunteered to help get-out-the-vote.

"Each poll that comes out shows this race as a dead heat, with Independent voters moving our way," the group said. "The momentum is clearly on our side and this race is anybody’s game. It will come down to who gets out the vote."

The latest poll, conducted May 23 to 26 by Marquette Law School, found that Walker had a 7 point lead over his opponent. Commentators have noted a surprising lack public polling in the run up to the election. The Democratic Party of Wisconsin's own polling found the race to be neck-and-neck.

The recall elections are the culmination of months of effort by state Democrats and labor unions who spearheaded a backlash against the first-term governor, who ran afoul of public opinion last year. Shortly after taking office, the well-funded tea party favorite joined Republicans in the state senate in attempting to strip public labor unions of their ability to collectively bargain. Throughout the winter and spring of 2011, demonstrators lined the streets and sidewalks of Madison to protest Walker's budget repair bill. Morello and McIlrath participated in those rallies as well.
