'My mom is not around a lot': Teacher shares heart-breaking notes from impoverished third-graders

Kyle Schwartz, a third grade teacher from Colorado, has become an Internet sensation after sharing her "I Wish My Teacher Knew" lesson plan on social media.

Schwartz teaches at Doull Elementary School in Denver and created the lesson plan to learn more about her students, many of whom come from low-income households.

"Ninety-two percent of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch," Schwartz told ABC News on Thursday. "As a new teacher, I struggled to understand the reality of my students' lives and how to best support them. I just felt like there was something I didn't know about my students."

The teacher had her students write down something they wish she knew about them. Last week, she shared some of the notes on her Twitter account.

"Some notes are heartbreaking like the first #iwishmyteacherknew tweet which read, 'I wish my teacher knew I don't have pencils at home to do my homework.' I care deeply about each and every one of my students and I don't want any of them to have to suffer the consequences of living in poverty, which is my main motivation for teaching," Schwartz said.

While many of the students expressed their struggles, other shared their hope for a better future.
