Nancy Pelosi defends Dem who called Trump profane name: 'If she were a man, would they be making a fuss out of it?'

On Friday, new Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi appeared on MSNBC in a town hall-style special with Joy Reid.

One of the biggest applause in the hourlong program came back when Pelosi pushed back against right-wingers who claimed to be offended when newly elected Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) referred to President Donald Trump as a "motherf*cker" and vowed to impeach him in a rousing speech to Democratic supporters.

Pelosi said that the conflict was generational and that as a grandmother she doesn't use such language but doesn't find it troubling.

"I don't think we should make a big deal of it. I really don't," she said. "That's probably the way people talk around -- again, I'm a grandmother and that's a different story."

She also said Trump uses much worse language.

"The president has to realize his words weigh a ton too," she said. "And some of the words he uses have a direct impact on people's lives. My colleague's comments do not have an impact on peoples' lives."

Pelosi also suggested to Reid that the controversy may have something to do with the speaker being a Muslim woman from Detroit.

"Let me ask you this: If she were a man, would they be making a fuss out of it?" she asked. "I think that women have to have each other's backs. In other words, it's not a zero-sum game. One woman's success is really a success for all women... I think we all kind of have to stick together on all of this because there are just behavioral patterns that in spite of themselves some men just can't get over it. But we can't be held up by that."
