Navarro aghast at reports Trump may appoint Steve Bannon: Can I ‘set my hair on fire?’

During a panel on CNN’s The Lead with Jake Tapper Thursday, Ana Navarro reacted to reports that Breitbart executive chairman Steve Bannon is Donald Trump’s top choice for chief of staff, asking, “do you have a match somewhere so that I can set my hair on fire?”

“You don't approve is what I am guessing,” Tapper replied.

“I don't approve and I suspect a lot of Republicans in congress don't approve,” Navarro replied, noting the chief of staff “sets the tone” for the incoming administration. Pressed on why she doesn’t approve, Navarro asked Tapper, “do you know Steve Bannon?”

Navarro called Bannon “polarizing,” noting he’s been critical of not just Democrats, but also many Republicans (Bannon once referred to Republican leadership as “c*nts” in an exchange with Breitbart reporter Matt Boyle). Bannon—who left Breitbart temporarily last summer to become the Trump campaign’s chief executive officer—describes his website as “the platform for the alt-right.”

Navarro said if he chooses Bannon it’s “sending very strong message” that the Trump administration is “not going to represent everybody.”

In response, commentator Kayleigh McEnany said Bannon is “on the forefront of the movement,” and choosing him “shows [Trump’s] going to stick to his roots.”

“It might not be a surprise to anybody, but I’m in mourning,” former Bernie Sanders national press secretary Symone Sanders replied. “We’re about to put the alt-right in the White House. To give Steve Bannon… Breitbart did identify some of the economic anxiety, but it also identified some of the white supremacy, some of the racism, xenophobia, the sexism—“

“You're forgetting anti-semitism,” Navarro interjected.

“To put that as the chief of people's house? I just can’t,” Sanders said.
