NBC’s Pete Williams explains why sacking Rod Rosenstein ‘doesn’t end the Russian investigation at all’

The Department of Justice official in charge of overseeing the special counsel’s investigations into President Donald Trump is reportedly close to leaving his job, but that will not end Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has supervised special counsel Robert Mueller since Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself.

"The White House is saying he's coming to the White House to resign. What we're hearing, in fact, from the Justice Department is that he has been summoned to the White House, and that if he's asked to resign he will refuse to do so," Williams reported.

"The practical effect here, Rod Rosenstein out, what does that then mean for the day-to-day oversight of the Russia investigation?" MSNBC anchor Craig Melvin asked. "Do we just not know yet?"

"Well, it doesn't end the Russia investigation at all," Williams explained. "The appointment of Robert Mueller is still legitimate."
