New York slams anti-gay laws in GOP-dominated states with campaign wooing their businesses

New York state's latest effort to attract businesses is targeting several Republican-dominated states -- and using their own legislation against them.

As The New Civil Rights Movement reported, the state's "Open Doors" ad campaign features headlines addressing not only anti-gay and anti-trans legislation passed in North Carolina and Mississippi, but a memo by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) defying the Supreme Court's decision legalizing same-sex marriages.

"As some in America seem to be forgetting exactly what freedom means, New York State is once again standing up for those who others try to keep down, by welcoming, promoting and applauding all who have so much to offer, giving us the privilege of being known by the companies we keep," a narrator states in one of the commercials for the campaign, which began airing on Sunday in Mississippi and North Carolina.

Besides mentioning referencing the state's history as part of the Underground Railroad and the Stonewall Rebellion, which was the starting point for the LGBTQ rights movement, the ads feature same-sex couples and a racially-diverse set of people reflecting its own population.

"When love is under attack by Hate, we welcome those with big hearts and big visions for what the world can become," the narrator says in another one of the commercials.

Several commercials released as part of the campaign were posted on Gov. Andrew Cuomo's (D) YouTube account.

"New York continues to be a beacon for justice and we will never waiver in our commitment to the LGBT community and creating a more just and inclusive society," Cuomo said in a statement.
