Daily Show host Trevor Noah hammered Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on Thursday for his obstinance regarding the nomination of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court.
"Man, Mitch McConnell seems like a bit of a dick -- just in principle, not as a person," Noah said, mockingly adding the senator's stated rationale.
Noah explained that the legislator is relying on a debunked claim that he is following the "Biden rule" in not even holding a confirmation hearing for Garland.
But the claim is dubious because it is not related to any official policy; it is based on a remark Vice President Joe Biden made during a speech two decades ago.
"Don't get me wrong -- Biden messed up," Noah explained. "But it's not a rule. Just because you propose something doesn't make it a rule -- and that includes tonight."
Noah also dismissed McConnell's claim that Republicans are stonewalling the nomination during this election year in order to "give the people a voice," ignoring the fact that voters re-elected President Barack Obama in 2012 to carry out this very function.
"This is rich coming from McConnell. He's saying, 'Give the people a voice,' but he's silencing the one voice who the people chose. He's so dug in on his partisanship he refuses to listen to reason."
