Chirlane McCray, First Lady of New York City, took part on Wednesday in a reading of the statement from the victim of a sexual assault by Brock Turner, Gothamist reported.
McCray appeared at the beginning of the reading, which was posted on Mayor Bill de Blasio's Facebook page, and said the event was being held in a show of solidarity with both Turner's victim and anyone who has been attacked in similar fashion.
"Because we are her allies. Because everyone needs to hear her story," she said. "Because in the time it takes us to read this statement, at least seven women in this country will report being raped. Because we all need to follow her example and turn our outrage into action."
McCray also acknowledged CNN host Ashleigh Banfield, who read the woman's 12-page letter in its entirety on Monday.
On Wednesday, the city's first lady was joined by city officials as well as actresses Cynthia Nixon, Karen Olivo, and Stacey Sargeant, as they all took turns reading from the 7,700-word statement.
For his part, the Mayor also used his Twitter account to post links to organizations and resources for sexual assault victims.
Turner was sentenced to just six months for his attack on the woman last January, sparking nationwide criticism. A petition calling for the removal of Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Aaron Persky has already amassed nearly 100,000 signatures.
