Officers for the NYPD's 88 precinct arrested a homeless woman and confiscated her belongings—because the shopping cart she had didn't belong to her.
Journalist Nick Encalada-Malinowski first reported the incident in a series of tweets, below. The NYPD confirmed to Raw Story that after getting a call about a larceny at Saint James Place and Greene Avenue in Brooklyn, New York, they were told a woman had taken a shopping cart from a C town grocery store. 42-year-old Tiffany Vaughn was stopped by police, taken into custody and charged with petit larceny. Her address is listed as a women's homeless shelter.
Recently, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio signaled his commitment to lowering arrests for so-called quality of life crimes by instructing his police department to stop arresting people for pot.
Both Mayor de Blasio and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo have faced criticism for failing to stem the skyrocketing rates of homelessness in New York city.
