Oklahoma man arrested in 21-year-old multiple murder case

Officials in Oklahoma have made an arrest in connection with a triple murder case dating back to 1992. According to the Associated Press, Grover J. Prewitt Jr., 60, of Bristow, Oklahoma was arrested Thursday as an accessory after the fact in the murders of Wendy Camp, 23; her daughter Cynthia Britto, 6; and Camp's sister-in-law Lisa Kregear, 22.

Prewitt is the former owner of land where the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation found three bodies in April after he tipped them off. He is the uncle of the man who was married to Camp and was engaged in a custody dispute with her at the time of her disappearance. Clothing, a backpack and other items found along with the bodies matches belongings that the trio were believed to be carrying when they disappeared on May 29, 1992.

In March of this year, Prewitt admitted to investigators that around the time of the women and child's disappearance his sister Beverly had requested that he order a backhoe to dig a hole for a new septic tank on a plot of land his mother, Ida Prewitt, was buying from him. The hole sat empty for a time, then Ida Prewitt said she had changed her mind about the property and asked her son to have the backhoe driver re-fill the 8-foot pit.

After that, Prewitt said, his mother asked him periodically to go and spread black pepper over the filled-in hole, presumably to cover the smell of decomposition. OSBI agent Melissa Gann wrote in her report that Grover Prewitt never looked in the hole "because he was scared of what he would see."

The bodies were exhumed on April 16. Prewitt confessed to authorities that he'd found circumstances around the disappearance to be "awful damn strange," but never went to police.

Ida Prewitt died in 2011.

OSBI Director Stan Florence made a statement to the press lauding Grover Prewitt's tip to investigators even as officers moved in to arrest him.

"The passage of 21 years gave a tipster confidence to come forward and provide the information necessary to help push this case forward," said Florence.

The OSBI believes that several people may have been involved in the perpetration and cover-up of the crime. Grover Prewitt's bond was set at $500,000.

The agency is offering a $5,000 reward to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest and prosecution of suspects in the murder. Anyone wanting to share information about the crime with investigators should call 1-800-522-8017.
