Will Oregon ban assault rifles?

Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum has drawn-up the paperwork to do exactly that, submitting the text for a ballot initiative to ban "Assault weapons include certain semiautomatic rifles or pistols with a detachable magazine; pistol or rifles with a fixed magazine holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition; certain semiautomatic shotguns. Large capacity magazine is ammunition feeding device with capacity of more than 10 rounds."

The ban would stop the possession or sale of semiautomatic rifles, pistols and shotguns. The law is aggressive, targeting any magazine that holds more than 10 rounds of ammunition.

Gun-owners would have 120 days to move their guns to another state, sell them to someone outside the state or hand them over to law enforcement. If gun-lovers violate the law and keep an assault rifle, they could face a Class B felony.

The text of the law drawn up Rosenblum will now be given to petitioners who will collect signatures. If they can get more than 88,000 signatures by July 6, the ballot initiative will be on the November ballot, reports The Oregonian.

The organizers of the ballot initiative, which had to collect 1,000 signatures to get the Attorney General to draw up the proposed law, will now start collecting signatura. They are looking for volunteers online.

Oregon conducts all elections by mail and routinely places among the nation's highest voter turnout.
