Report: Parent holding middle school principal hostage surrenders

UPDATE II: The gunman who reportedly held a middle school principal hostage in upstate New York on Tuesday morning is in custody and students are being released from lock-down, reports the Poughkeepsie Journal.

MYFox New York reports that the man "surrendered peacefully" and "no one was hurt." Witnesses told the Journal that no shots were fired during the incident.

News reports suggest the gunman, who allegedly held hostage the middle-school principal of a joint middle and high school, was known to police and school authorities, and was a 1980s graduate of the local school district. News reports indicate the man may have been suffering from emotional problems.

UPDATE: A man in his 40s holding a school principal hostage in Pine Plains, New York, has an arrest record and was "well known" to police, MSNBC reported Tuesday morning.

The man is a graduate of the local school district and was known to school officials, according to CBS channel 6 in Albany.

The station reports:

The man, who officers said graduated from the district in the 1980s, was said to have emotional issues.

Police said the man entered Stissing Mountain Middle School this morning with a rifle, went into a men’s bathroom and eventually found his way to the principal’s office.

The incident is reportedly unfolding at Stissing Mountain Middle/High School. Police say the principal being held hostage is the head of the middle-school part of the rural school. The facility serves about 600 pupils.

BREAKING: The principal of a Pine Plains, New York, high school was reportedly taken hostage by a gunman Tuesday morning, prompting police to lock down the school and seal a perimeter around it.

CNN reports that White Plains Town Supervisor Gregg Pulver believes the gunman is a parent.

There are a large number of county and state police officers on the scene but are not releasing much information. Witnesses say students were being removed from the back of the school and were being walked, single-file, away from the school.

People in the area have described a lot of police vehicles racing down county roads starting at about 8:30 a.m. A perimeter has been set up around the school.

The incident is reportedly unfolding at Stissing Mountain High School, about 90 miles north of New York City. Dutchess County sheriff's deputy T.J. Hanlon told the Poughkeepsie Journal that the situation is "very fluid."
