Journalist Marc Lamont Hill clashed with Piers Morgan on a new episode of "Piers Morgan Uncensored" on Wednesday over the seeming lack of media coverage of a high-profile crime.
Late last month, a Ukrainian refugee named Iryna Zarutska was brutally stabbed to death while riding public transit in Charlotte, North Carolina. The killing sparked intense debate online about media coverage of serious crimes.
Morgan and a couple of his panelists argued that the mainstream media wasn't covering the story more because it involved a white victim. They compared coverage of Zarutska's killing to that of George Floyd in 2020, which sparked nationwide backlash.
Hill said there was an even more "cynical" reason why the story wasn't getting more coverage.
"I am horrified by this killing and I think that it's awful," Hill said. "There are stories about people being killed on trains across the country. The fact that this particular one didn't get told is unfortunate, but I don't think it was because she's white or the assailant was Black."
"I think, honestly, it's more cynical than that," he continued. "I think that people don't care, and newsrooms often pitch to what people care about, and people like sexy stories. They like counter-intuitive stories. They like stories of corrupt power, and this isn't one of those."
"Wow!" Morgan replied. "Well, it is to me!"
